As you read the following story, I want you to remember that all of us, at one time or another, has gone to a store like this thinking that it is safe for all of us.
AUSTELL, GA — Police are searching for a man they say raped and robbed a woman whom he kidnapped as she exited an Austell drug store.
The man approached the 24-year-old woman at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday just after she walked out of the CVS Pharmacy at 800 East-West Connector in Austell, according to Cobb Police. He then forced the woman into her vehicle and had her drive him to an unknown location, where he raped her, police said.
He then forced the woman drive to various ATMs in the Atlanta area to withdraw money from her bank account, according to police.
Cobb Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said police plan to review the victims’s ATM records to get an idea where she was taken because she had little memory of the ordeal.
“The victim has been traumatized to a point where she was not able to produce much detail as to where she was able to drive to,” Pierce said.
After taking an undisclosed amount of cash from the woman, the man got out of her car and fled the area on foot, Pierce said.
The woman was hospitalized but has since been released, Pierce said.
Store video shows the man walking “very casually” in front of the drug store, waiting for the victim to emerge, Pierce said.
I was obviously not there when this happened, but I can say with most certainty that he didn't decide to pick this woman at the moment she left the store. I am positive that he had been watching her and maybe even following her for some time to make sure that she was an easy target, which unfortunately she turned out to be.
It is far better to be prepared for the worst and never have to use it, than to have the worst happen and not be prepared for it.
PREPARE TO SURVIVE!
Until next time.......
If she would have been more aware of what was going on around her, she may have been able to "see" her attacker as he stalked her, or noticed that the same man she saw at the other place is now outside and done something to protect herself against this kind of attack.
TSA, or Total Situational Awareness is the key to avoiding a situation like this one. Now, what could she have done as the attack occurred to make sure that she was not his next victim? The best thing that she could have done is to drop him like a bad habit and brutally attack him in the same manner he did to her BEFORE he had the chance to do it to her. She could have done this if she had the right mindset and the proper training to learn the mindset and the skills necessary to survive the encounter and go home safely.
I may never really say what everyone wants to hear. But this is a place where I will talk about real violence and how to survive it. Its not pretty, but neither is death. Please post comments or question to my blog.

How do you prepare?
When you first learned to drive a stick shift, how did you learn? You practiced and learned how to mash the clutch, shift the stick and then let out the clutch slowly while applying the gas, right?
I'm sure you had many a jump and bump and a stalled engine too! And after a while it just became second nature and you could do it just as flawlessly as anyone else could. You learned the gross motor skills necessary to drive your car smoothly down the road.
If I gave you statistics that showed that one in 100 women will be the victim of a car accident due to the inability to properly drive a stick-shift, what would you do? YOU WOULD PRACTICE YOUR ASS OFF!! You would do everything in your power to not become a statistic right?
Well the FBI has published reports that prove that 1 in 4 women WILL be the victim of some kind of violent crime, rape, sexual assault or beating in their lifetime!
So how do you prepare? Well, some women will not do anything thinking "it won't happen to me", some will take a weekend course on "women's self defense" and feel that they can handle a bigger, stronger attacker. (Remember the stick-shift? How long did it take you to get really good at that?) Some will enroll at the local dojo and learn some form of martial art, where they are going to teach you some new moves and techniques that you have never done before and hope they will work! (STICK-SHIFT? How long to get those gross motor skills refined?)
The only way to really learn and make it stick is this.....make it simple, make it real and make those gross motor skills an everyday part of your life.
When you are faced with a true violent encounter, and not the movie world kind (ones that will never happen in your life) you will go through a series of changes in you mental and physical being that will make you forget some of your basic skills, like breathing, vision, thought patterns (ever hear of tunnel vision?) if you can't remember some of these skills, how are you going to remember a complex series of movements to render a larger more determined attacker non-functional?
You need to work those gross motor skills until you can protect yourself at any time.
Take the time, make the time to learn these skills so they become part of your life, then the statistics don't matter.
Until next time.......

Are you aware....
Are you aware?
Due to my previous life in the protection business, I have a habit of watching and reading people's body language and actions, and one thing that has disturbed me for so long is the pure disregard that some people have for their personal safety or that of their loved ones.
The other day I was in SLC and watched a man get out of his car, motor running, and go into a store. No big deal? The problem is that he left his two children in the car! With it running!!! Both children were under the age of four. How about we serve them up on a platter?!?
I have also watched as women will come out of the store, groceries in hand along with purse, cell phone etc....get to their car and fumble around in their purse for their keys while talking on the phone! HELLO?
Have witnessed too many women leave their work, alone, to the elevator or parking structure...alone....and not pay attention to what is around them.
Let me let you in on a cold hard fact....the violent criminal is stalking its prey.....YOU.....so he can pick the most opportune time to strike! And you are giving him the opening. The predator is not picking people at random! He is watching and waiting for you to show him when the best time is to attack.
If you do not know what is happening around you at all times and seeing the predator before he has the chance, then you might as well wear a sign that says "pick me, I'm an easy target!"
As I said, are you aware?
Until next time.....
